An unsaved person is capable of civil good works, but not spiritual good works. A wicked person can give food to the poor which is good, but that act does not merit salvation. Salvation comes through one thing: having the penalty for your sins paid for by the sacrificial death and punishment Jesus willingly submitted to on our behalf. God declares that the only way to have Jesus "paid penalty" applied to OUR account, is to repent of our sins and believe in Jesus and in what He did to pay for our sins. From a human level, it's sad that the good works of the unbeliever don't "count" towards eternity but that's not the way our Creator said things work, and of course, He knows the PERFECT best for us.

I have a question, you said "We know from Scripture that we cannot earn our salvation through good works". I am a Christian and sometimes keeping the faith can be challenging but I think a "normal" challenge for many people. I have many important people in my life who are not Christians or any religion really, since they were never really brought up with one. This lack of guidance early in life and then placement in a secular society critical of religion makes it difficult to find God. If through morals result in good works (although not done in the name of God) does that preclude their salvation? It makes me quite sad to think that our all loving God would not account for misguided decisions. I suppose since we do not know what God thinks and plans to do, there is no point worrying, but it does certainly sadden me.

Anyway, excellent article. Thank you for your thoughts. My prayers for you and your family.

You said several times: "Remember, the Bible does not contradict itself and always plainly interprets itself. So we know faith alone saves us"

What, then, is meant by Ephesians 2: 8&9?

I love the saying: "Faith produces works; works do not produce faith." We see many who claim to be atheists who have good works, but their works do not produce faith in their hearts, nor can it save them. On the other hand, true faith will have good works as its natural product.
