Romans 1:25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. (NKJV)

What is the essence of all false religion or lack of religion? It can be summed up as: worshiping the creature instead of the Creator. To accomplish this, the truth is exchanged for “the lie”… what is “the lie”? It is the same lie that is the foundation of all false religion; the same lie that caused Man to fall in the first place; the same lie that is the greatest of lies: YOU CAN BE EQUAL TO GOD.
Satan himself introduced “the lie” to mankind:
Genesis 3:5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (NKJV, emphasis mine)
Every single ungodly idea, religion, movement, philosophy or concept can be traced back to the great lie of Satan. Worship of the creation (whether an object, or man); replacing the rightful place of the Creator… this is the foundation, the root, the source of all things opposing God. Any time God is replaced, the replacement is attempting to “be like God”. All of man’s religions attempt to worship the creature. Most of the time that creature is man himself. There are religions that worship animals, or stars, or nature; but there are just as many who worship a false version of “god” or an elevated version of man as “god”.
The point being this: all false religion (or lack of any religion) in essence boils down to MAN WORSHIPING HIMSELF. God’s power and eternal nature are clearly revealed to all men (Rom 1.20). When man worships ANYTHING other than the true Creator God, then he has elevated himself as “god” serving himself (the creature) rather than the Creator.
Inside the walls of the world and the Church alike, the “lie” finds fertile soil. The Church has been infiltrated and divided since the beginning by false teachers trying to elevate man’s status either above what God has declared, or in many cases, to equal status with God Himself.
Well, that’s all fine and dandy, but how does that apply to Christians on a practical basis? Several ways:
- We need to understand the motive behind false religions
- We need to comprehend the foundation for rebellion against God
- Understanding this helps us to identify which teachings are false (those that elevate the creature rather than the Creator)
- It helps us to keep our own priorities straight when we become too focused on “the creature” whether it be through materialism or narcissism.
- We need to be aware that Satan is still whispering “the lie” all over the world, and in the church, even today
True Christians are not immune to “worshipping the creature”. Whatever takes precedence over God in your life, is what you worship. It can be your job, money, recreation, entertainment, sports, leisure or even relationships. Whatever is keeping you from God, is the object of your worship. God is the only “Creator”; everything else is “creature”. To worship the creature is to give place to “the great lie” of elevating man to god.
So as Christians, let us not assume that only those outside of Christianity are capable of “exchanging the truth for a lie”…. every time God is second place or lower in our lives, we have exchanged the truth for a lie as well. Why? Because we are showing that we believe something other than God is worthy to be of more importance in our life. That is the essence of “worshipping the creature”.
Lord, Help us to be aware that “the lie” is still being repeated over and over, even in Your Church. Help us to recognize it, and have discernment. May we ever worship the Creator and not the creature. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Contemplation: Is there any part of the creation you are worshipping? Are you sure?
Application: Whatever takes God’s place, we worship. Everytime we worship something other than God, we take part in the “great lie” because we have elevated ourselves equal to, or above God.
