John 3:19 (NKJV) And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
The world is dark. Darker in some places, getting darker in even more.
What is darkness? Evil, wickedness, betrayal, lies, oppression… it’s growing everywhere. Seems there is no longer a single place or culture on Earth that is not growing in darkness, be it morality, violence, persecution or poverty.
So what to do about it? First, Christians understand that this is the natural tendency of the human race. Those who reject God and the Bible believe humans are basically “good” while Scripture clearly tells us that is opposite of the truth. In reality, apart from God, man is desperately wicked, continually seeking evil. You certainly would not learn this from the never ending list of Christian ear-tickling books that promote the same “self-esteem” and “you’re a good guy” we find in humanist theory, but the history of humanity gives irrefutable and relentlessly repeated evidence that the Bible is indeed absolutely correct.
Understanding this reality, the Christian then recognizes that “darkness” presents an opportunity to shine the Light. When you walk in a dark room, or the electricity goes out, or you find yourself outside in the pitch dark, what is your first thought, impulse or inclination? Shine a light, right?
Why isn’t that our first and strong desire when it comes to spiritual darkness? It should be. Shine the Light.
